Editorial standards: how we research, check and correct our material

Remedial Corner publishes study material that learners use to prepare for real examinations, so the standard we hold ourselves to is the standard a teacher would hold us to. This page explains where our material comes from, who checks it, and what happens when something is wrong.

Who is responsible for this site

Every article is written and reviewed by Akankwatsa Andrew OBA, a teacher of History and Kiswahili and an accessibility specialist working in Uganda. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Education (History and Kiswahili) from Makerere University (2019), has taught the subjects this site covers, and has worked as an officer in the Ministry of Education and Sports. His name and the review date sit at the foot of every article.

Where our material comes from

  • The syllabus first. Topic coverage, learning outcomes and paper allocations are taken from National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabi and Ministry of Education and Sports documents. Where a syllabus states the number of periods or the outcome code, that is what we publish.
  • Examination requirements. Past paper structure, question styles and mark allocations are based on Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) papers and marking guidance.
  • Named public sources. Where we cite a fact from outside the syllabus, the source is named and linked, and links to official bodies are used in preference to summaries.
  • Classroom experience. Explanations are shaped by what has actually worked with learners in Ugandan classrooms, including learners with disabilities.

What we do not do

  • We do not publish statistics, prices, dates, results, quotations or school names we cannot point to a source for.
  • We do not publish predicted examination questions as though they were leaked or guaranteed.
  • We do not use images that pretend to be photographs of real documents, boards or exam papers. Photographs of legible text are unreliable and misleading; where a diagram carries data or labels, we draw it as a diagram instead.
  • We do not accept payment to change what an article says about a subject.

How material is checked before it is published

  1. Written against the syllabus, so that coverage matches what is examinable rather than what is merely interesting.
  2. Worked examples checked by hand. Every calculation, table and worked answer is re-computed from the source figures; if a figure in a diagram disagrees with the text, the diagram is corrected.
  3. Read for accessibility. Headings stay in order, links describe where they go, every image has alt text describing what it shows, and meaning never depends on colour alone.
  4. Published, then kept up to date. When a syllabus, paper format or requirement changes, the affected articles are revised and their review date is updated.

Corrections

Errors are corrected, not quietly deleted. If something on this site is wrong, write to [email protected] with the page address and what you believe is incorrect. We will check it against the source, correct the page, and update the review date shown on the article.

Funding and independence

Remedial Corner is independently owned and run. Some pages carry advertising, and we offer paid services to schools and organisations; both are described on our advertising page. Advertisers and clients have no influence over what our articles say, and sponsored material is labelled as such.

Accessibility commitment

This is an inclusive education site, so accessibility is a requirement rather than a preference. We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 AA: sufficient colour contrast for text, visible focus outlines, keyboard-operable menus that work without JavaScript, and text alternatives for images. Where we fall short, we want to know — write to [email protected]. Our full commitments are in the Disability Inclusion Statement.
