Making Personal Choices in Life: How Students Can Make Better Career and Life Decisions
Remedial Corner Online Career Session — Learn how to make informed
career choices, make better life decisions, discover your strengths and prepare
for your future.
Making Personal Choices in Life
Every young person reaches moments when a decision can change the direction of
their life. Which subjects should I choose? What course should I study? Which
career is right for me? Should I follow my passion or choose a career that
promises financial security?
These are not simple questions. Our personal choices influence our education,
relationships, careers, finances, character and future opportunities.
For students and young people, learning how to make informed decisions is one
of the most important life skills they can develop.
This is the focus of the upcoming Remedial Corner Online Career

Why Personal Choices Matter
Life is a series of choices. Some choices may appear small at first but have
long-term consequences.
Choosing how to use your time, the people you associate with, the subjects you
study, the skills you develop and the goals you pursue can gradually shape your
future.
For students, this is especially important because education is closely
connected to future career opportunities.
Career guidance should therefore help learners understand themselves and make
informed decisions instead of simply telling them which profession to pursue.
How to Choose the Right Career
One of the biggest questions students ask is:
“How do I choose the right career?”
There is no single career that is best for everyone. A good career choice
should consider several factors, including your interests, abilities, values,
personality, educational opportunities, skills and future opportunities.
Students should ask themselves:
- What am I good at?
- What do I enjoy doing?
- What are my values?
- What skills do I have?
- What skills do I need to develop?
- What career opportunities are available?
- What education or training does the career require?
- What kind of person do I want to become?
Five Questions to Ask Before Making a Career Choice
1. What Am I Good At?
Every learner has strengths. One student may be good at explaining ideas,
another may enjoy solving mathematical problems, while another may have
talents in technology, writing, leadership, agriculture or communication.
2. What Do I Enjoy Doing?
Interest matters. When you enjoy an area of learning, you are more likely to
spend time developing your skills in that area.
3. What Are My Values?
Your values influence the kind of life you want to build. Some people value
financial security, while others value creativity, independence, leadership,
community service or helping other people.
4. What Opportunities Exist?
Career planning requires students to look beyond the classroom. Research
courses, institutions, entry requirements, skills, employers and emerging
career opportunities.
5. What Kind of Person Do I Want to Become?
A career is not only about earning a salary. It is also about the skills you
develop, the people you serve, the problems you solve and the contribution you
make to society.
Career Choice Is More Than Subject Choice
For secondary school students, personal choices often begin with subject
selection.
A student may choose subjects because friends are taking them, because parents
prefer them or because a particular combination appears prestigious.
However, subject choice should be connected to the student’s abilities,
interests and possible career pathways.
Students should seek reliable information before making important academic
decisions. Talk to teachers, career professionals and people already working
in the profession you are considering.
Should Parents Choose Their Children’s Careers?
Parents have an important role in guiding young people, but guidance is
different from making every decision for them.
Parents can provide valuable experience and advice. Teachers can provide
educational and career information. Professionals can provide practical
experience.
However, learners should gradually learn to take responsibility for their own
informed decisions.
Making Better Life Choices
Career decisions are only one part of personal decision-making. Young people
also make choices about friendships, relationships, education, money, social
media, time management and personal behaviour.
Making better life choices begins with understanding that
every choice has consequences.
Before making an important decision, ask yourself:
- What are my options?
- What information do I have?
- What information am I missing?
- What could happen if I choose this option?
- Who can give me reliable advice?
- Does this choice support my long-term goals?
- Am I making this decision because of pressure from other people?
- Will I be proud of this decision in the future?

Do Not Choose a Career Because of Pressure
One of the biggest challenges facing students is pressure.
A student may hear:
- “Everyone is studying medicine.”
- “Engineers earn a lot of money.”
- “You should study law.”
- “Your family expects you to become a doctor.”
- “Your friends are joining that university.”
Such statements may influence a young person’s decisions. However, a career
should not be selected simply because it is popular.
Students should learn to distinguish between advice and
pressure.
Advice gives you information and allows you to think. Pressure tries to make
the decision for you.
Your First Career Choice Does Not Have to Be Your Final Choice
Choosing a career does not mean predicting your entire life.
The world of work continues to change. Technology, artificial intelligence,
entrepreneurship and new industries are creating new opportunities while
changing existing occupations.
Students should therefore develop a mindset of lifelong learning.
You may choose one course and later discover another area that interests you.
You may develop new skills and move into another profession. You may become an
entrepreneur or combine several skills to create a new career pathway.
The important thing is to make informed decisions and remain willing to learn.
Why Career Guidance Matters
Career guidance helps students move from confusion to clarity.
It can help learners understand personal strengths, explore career options,
investigate educational pathways and develop realistic plans.
Career guidance can also help students avoid common mistakes such as choosing
courses because of peer pressure, selecting careers without researching them
or confusing a high salary with career satisfaction.
